USFK and Daegu – A Historical Overview

The Early Days

The United States Forces Korea (USFK) was established on July 1, 1957, in the aftermath of the Korean War, to support and train joint ROK-U.S. Forces and United Nations Command multinational forces. Daegu, the fourth-largest city in South Korea, has been a strategic location for USFK due to its central position and historical significance. The establishment of USAG Daegu marked the beginning of a long-standing partnership between the United States and South Korea, aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Modern-Day USFK in Daegu

Today, Area IV plays a crucial role within the USFK structure, supporting the Eighth Army and other major components. Recent upgrades have enhanced the facilities, ensuring that service members and their families have access to modern amenities and services. The relocation of the USFK headquarters to Camp Humphreys has not diminished the importance of Daegu, which continues to be a key logistics and support hub.

Key Installations and Facilities

Camp Walker

Camp Walker, named after General Walton Walker, serves as a central hub for USAG Daegu. It hosts several key units and offers a range of facilities, including a PX, Commissary, DFACs, and MWR services. Recent upgrades include the expansion of the community activity center, improved housing, and enhanced recreational facilities.

Changes and Closures in Daegu Nam-gu

Over the years, there have been several changes and closures in the Daegu Nam-gu area, impacting both USFK operations and the local community. These changes are part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and enhance the quality of life for service members and their families.
