Getting a metal item repaired in Seoul is possible — but it requires knowing which type of shop to look for, since what sounds like one job (fixing a metal bowl) can mean different things depending on what is broken and what the item is used for.
Soldering, Brazing, or Welding?
The right repair method depends on the metal and the joint:
Soldering — Uses low-temperature metal alloy to join pieces. Common for electronics and plumbing, but not typically used for stainless steel kitchenware. Standard soldering materials are also not food-safe for surfaces that touch food.
Brazing — Higher temperature than soldering, uses brass or silver filler. Can join stainless steel and produce stronger joints. Some metalwork shops offer this for kitchenware repairs.
Welding (용접) — The strongest option for steel. TIG welding produces clean welds on stainless steel with minimal distortion. This is what you want for a stainless bowl handle or bracket repair if you want a durable result.
For most kitchen metal repair jobs — a detached handle, a cracked bracket, a loose fitting — welding or brazing is more appropriate than soldering.
Where to Find Metal Repair in Seoul
Euljiro (을지로) — This central Seoul area is the most reliable destination for metalwork, hardware, and repair services. The streets around Euljiro 3-ga and 4-ga station have workshops handling fabrication, cutting, welding, and small repairs. Walk in with your item and most shops will give you a quick assessment.
Naver Maps search — Search 용접 (welding) or 금속 수리 (metal repair) near your location. Smaller neighborhood shops do exist outside Euljiro, though they are harder to find without a Naver search.
Hardware supply districts — Most Korean cities have a hardware district similar to Euljiro where metalwork and repair shops cluster. In Busan, the Bupyeong area has similar characteristics.
Food Safety Consideration
If the item being repaired will contact food — the interior of a mixing bowl, a cooking pot, a utensil — the repair material matters. Tell the shop explicitly that the item is used for food and ask whether their repair method and filler material are food-safe for the intended use.
Stainless steel welded with the right filler rod and cleaned properly is food-safe. A quick repair using inappropriate filler or solder is not. This is worth confirming before use.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
Daiso, E-Mart, Homeplus, and kitchen supply stores in Korea sell stainless steel bowls, handles, and kitchenware at low prices. If the item in question is a standard mixing bowl or common kitchen piece, compare the cost of repair against a replacement before committing to a shop visit.
If the item has sentimental value, is custom, or is part of a larger set that is difficult to replace individually, repair is worth pursuing.
