USFK and Daegu: A Brief History
United States Forces Korea (USFK) was established on July 1, 1957, following the Korean War, to support joint ROK-U.S. and United Nations Command forces. Daegu’s central location and historical significance made it a strategic USFK site from early on. USAG Daegu marked the start of a long-standing partnership between the two countries focused on regional stability.
USFK in Daegu Today
Area IV continues to support the Eighth Army and other major USFK components. While USFK headquarters relocated to Camp Humphreys, Daegu remains an important logistics and support hub, with facility upgrades ongoing over the years.
Key Installations
Camp Walker, named after General Walton Walker, is the central hub for USAG Daegu. It hosts a PX, Commissary, DFACs, and MWR services, along with housing and recreational facilities.
Camp Carroll, located in Waegwan, handles logistics and support operations, with housing and recreational facilities supporting personnel and their families.
Camp George, smaller than the others, provides support functions and community amenities for service members stationed there.

Your First Week in Daegu
For precise, current orientation details, check official USFK resources. Broadly, expect the following:
Arrival and in-processing. A sponsor typically meets you at Daegu International Airport, coordinates transport to your assigned installation, and helps with initial paperwork.
Housing and settling in. The housing office assists with finding on-post or off-post accommodation. Setting up utilities and local services comes next.
Base orientation. Mandatory briefings introduce you to base facilities, key contacts, and available resources.
Exploring the installation. A guided tour typically covers dining, shopping, and leisure facilities on post.
Community integration. MWR programs and community events offer ways to connect with other service members and families.
Finalizing setup. Administrative tasks and role preparation round out the transition process.
Family Life at USAG Daegu
Family activities. MWR programs include recreational activities, sports, and events designed for families and children.
Schools and childcare. DoDEA schools provide education for children, and the CDC offers flexible childcare options for working parents.
Dining and shopping. Bases offer dining options both on and off post, along with a PX and Commissary.
Settling In
A PCS to Daegu means adjusting to a new culture while continuing your service. Area IV’s community-oriented environment is built to support that transition, with resources available through your unit, the housing office, and MWR. Connecting with the local expat and USFK community early on tends to make the adjustment smoother.
